What this data means

Understanding Australian Net Worth

The gap between median and mean net worth at every age group tells an important story: a relatively small number of high-wealth households pull the mean upward. This means the median is a more realistic benchmark for most Australians. If you're above the median for your age group, you're genuinely ahead of the majority of your peers — not just an average pulled up by the ultra-wealthy.

Net worth in Australia is dominated by two assets: the family home and superannuation. Together, these typically account for 60–80% of a household's total wealth by the time Australians reach their 40s. This is why wealth accumulation tends to accelerate sharply in the 35–55 age range, as property values compound and super balances grow. It also explains why younger Australians who are renters or who haven't started investing yet can feel behind — the ABS data includes owner-occupied property, which skews the median upward for those groups.

The bottom 25% figures are a useful reality check. Even among 35–39-year-olds, a quarter of Australians have a net worth below $78,000 — often reflecting HECS debt, high rents, car loans, or limited access to the property market. If you're in this bracket, you're far from alone. The most important metric at any age isn't your absolute number: it's whether you're growing your net worth year-on-year and whether your trajectory is heading in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the ABS Household Income and Wealth Survey 2021-22, the median net worth for all Australian households is approximately $573,000. However, this varies significantly by age — younger Australians in the 25–29 bracket have a median of around $65,000, while those aged 55–64 have a median of $877,000. The mean (average) is higher at every age group due to the influence of very high-wealth households at the top of the distribution.
Superannuation is included in ABS net worth calculations and is the single largest asset for most Australian households. For Australians in their 40s and 50s, super can account for 30–50% of total net worth. The compulsory 11% employer contribution (rising to 12% by 2025) means super grows substantially throughout a working career, even without voluntary contributions. For younger Australians, super is often their largest financial asset — even if their overall net worth is low due to limited savings or no property ownership.
A commonly used benchmark is 1× your annual salary saved by age 35, 3× by age 45, and 7× by retirement. Using the ABS data, being above the median for your age group is a solid starting point. For example, a net worth above $168,000 at age 30–34 puts you in the top half of your peers. The most important thing is the trend — are you growing your net worth year-on-year? Consistent progress matters more than hitting an arbitrary number at a specific age.
